Precision Machinery Shaft and Coupling Alignment

BACKGROUND:

In rotating equipment, vibrations frequently lead to significant issues, potentially resulting in production loss. Excessive vibrations not only pose a threat to the equipment itself but can also impact other connected machinery. Common causes of vibration include misalignment and imbalance.

Shaft and coupling alignment is a specialized technical skill requiring precise measurement instruments and the expertise of experienced technicians. Proper alignment is critical for machinery such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and similar equipment. This workshop provides comprehensive training and practical experience in shaft and coupling alignment to address misalignment problems effectively in rotating machinery.

OBJECTIVES:

By completing this course, participants will gain essential knowledge and skills for performing proper shaft and coupling alignments. Notably, misalignment is a significant factor responsible for more than half of all excessive vibrations in machines. Consequently, it leads to premature wear of bearings and seals. This, in turn, directly impacts machine life, production availability, and overall plant profitability.

Moreover, the course emphasizes precise and consistent alignment techniques to help reduce maintenance costs. It also aims to minimize unscheduled downtime, improve process quality, and extend equipment lifespan. Participants will not only learn alignment principles applicable to various methods and machinery but also receive this information in simple, practical terms. Additionally, the training incorporates hands-on exercises to ensure mastery of precision alignment techniques.

Furthermore, depending on client needs, the course provides training in either the Reverse Dial Indicator or Rim-and-Face alignment methods. Both approaches offer a comprehensive overview of current alignment practices, ensuring participants are equipped with the most up-to-date skills.

ABOUT THE COURSE LEADERS:

Ir. Soetrisno Sonto, M.Si.

Ir. Sutrisno Sonto, Msi, is a distinguished Senior Reliability Specialist with over three decades of expertise in the oil and gas sector, covering both offshore and onshore operations. By leveraging his profound mechanical knowledge, he ensures efficiency and precision in his work. Furthermore, his career reflects a perfect blend of maturity, commitment, and extensive experience, making him a trusted leader in reliability engineering.

In terms of education, he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Magister Degree in Business, which he earned in 2014. Additionally, Ir. Sutrisno has strengthened his credentials through various professional certifications. These include Infrared Thermography, Vibration Analysis Levels 1 and 2, In-situ Balancing, Advanced Vibration Analytics, Machinery Alignment, and Machinery Vibration Analysis, achieved across Indonesia and Singapore.

Moreover, Ir. Sutrisno’s professional affiliations demonstrate his global influence. He is actively involved in the USA Vibration Institute, TRUC Reliability User Conference, and the Indonesia Oil/Gas Discussion Forum. Notably, his contributions to these forums include insightful papers such as Strategy to Eliminate Vibration for New or Re-built Machineries due to Pipe Strain by Applying API 686 Standard and My Compressor Excessive Vibration Damaging the Bearing: It is due to Liquid Discovered Inside the Screws.

His career, which began in 1988 at the Arun LNG Project in Aceh, Indonesia, highlights his commitment to professional growth. Later, he moved to Singapore, where he worked as a Vibration Support Manager. Afterward, in 1993, he joined Asamera (Oil & Gas Company in Indonesia) as a Vibration Engineer, a role he fulfilled for a decade. Ultimately, before retiring in 2014, he excelled as a Senior Mechanical & Maintenance Specialist at ConocoPhillips. During this time, he earned seven prestigious Management Awards for his outstanding contributions.

Since retiring, Ir. Sutrisno has devoted his time to training and consultancy. As a result, he has successfully completed 12 projects related to operations and maintenance, focusing on machinery, rotating equipment, technical assessments, and mentoring. These efforts have greatly benefited companies in the gas, petrochemical, geothermal, oil/gas, and power generation industries, both onshore and offshore across Indonesia. Thus, his legacy in the industry continues to grow through his dedication to sharing knowledge and expertise.
