IT Risk Management

BACKGROUND:

This course deals with how IT Risk Management helps to achieve an appropriate balance between realizing opportunities for gains while minimizing losses. It is an integral part of good management practice and an essential element of good corporate governance. IT Risk Management is an iterative process consisting of steps that, when undertaken in sequence, enable continuous improvement in IT decision-making and facilitate continuous improvement in IT performance.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Able to define the process of identifying vulnerabilities and threats to an organization’s information resources, ensuring the application of appropriate countermeasures to support business objectives.
  • Design high-performance and cloud applications to support scalable online services while considering risk mitigation strategies.
  • Learn to recognize challenges in risk assessment processes, including the design of big data processing applications to handle high-volume and high-velocity data efficiently.
  • Able to describe the road-mapping of IT-related risk strategies, using a framework based on the CMM maturity level concept to align with IT processes.

Introduction

Processes
Participants will learn to recognize key issues in managing risks, including:

  • Identification and classification of information resources or assets requiring protection.
  • Assessment of threats, vulnerabilities, and the likelihood of their occurrence.

Risk Indicators
This segment highlights the need for IT systems to address diversified risk factors across multiple levels, including:

  • Operational Risks: Issues that could compromise the effectiveness of IT systems and supporting infrastructure.
  • Project Risks: Challenges in understanding and managing project complexity.
  • Strategic Risks: Focus on aligning IT capabilities with business strategy.

Loss Event Database
Participants will explore intentional and unintentional actions that cause data loss, along with organizational responsibilities such as:

  • Preventing data loss.
  • Recovering from data loss.
  • Understanding the cost implications of data loss.

Developing a Comprehensive Risk Program
This segment provides guidance on establishing an effective program, including:

  • Defining the program’s purpose.
  • Assigning clear responsibility for managing risks.

Maturity Framework for Risk Planning
This section focuses on road-mapping risk strategies in relation to IT processes, with a framework based on the CMM maturity level concept.

IT-Specific Risk Considerations
Participants will examine the role of risk assessment within IT governance, which includes identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing operational challenges. The focus is on applying IT resources effectively to minimize, monitor, and control the probability and impact of adverse events.

Case Studies
Real-world examples will be used to illustrate various approaches to addressing IT risks.
